US Positions Special Operations Forces
THU, OCT 18, 2001
The US military has positioned special operations forces for another kind of strike on terrorism following more than a week's bombing against military installations in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the airstrike campaign showed no sign of abating.

A US defense official said on Wednesday that helicopter-borne special forces were stationed on the US Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean.

The special "ops" forces, which specialize in lightening raids and other secret missions, were put in place over the weekend and are ready to join the campaign.

Informed sources were quoted as saying that US infantry troops had landed near the Taliban's stronghold of Kandahar.

In the latest airstrikes, US jets struck an oil depot at a Taliban army garrison Wednesday near Kabul. Elsewhere, Taliban officials claimed that two trucks carrying fleeing Afghan residents were hit near Kandahar and seven civilians were killed. The claim has not been verified.
