US Congressional leaders ordered an unprecedented shutdown of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, just hours before the Governor of New York announced that the deadly anthrax bacteria might have been detected in his Manhattan offices.
Five weeks after the worst terrorist strikes in US history killed more than 5,000 people in New York and Washington, the discovery of anthrax has only added to anxiety throughout the United States.
The government sources said preliminary testing indicated that the anthrax bacteria found in Senator Tom Daschle's office had been refined enough so that it could be easily dispersed through the air.
Thirty-three Senate staff members have tested positive from exposure to a letter mailed to his office. Health officials said that the anthrax was "High grade, very virulant, and sophisticated.
At a news conference in Moscow, US Ambassador to Russia Alexander Vershbow, said that Russia has offered to share an anthrax vaccine it has developed to help the US combat the outbreak.
