Air Defense Reinforced in Western France, Says Official
FRI, OCT 19, 2001
Air defense in the west of the country has been reinforced with positioning of pursuit planes and radars of ground-to-air missile system, French Defense Ministry announced Friday.

Some Mirage F1s and Mirage 2000s are positioned near Lorient, in the south of Bretagne and the radars are deployed near the nuclear re-processing plant in La Hague, north of Manche, said General Alain Raevel, deputy spokesman for the ministry.

The positioning of the pursuit planes is to bring air security in the west to the same level in the other regions of France, Raevel said.

And the radar system near nuclear plant aims to reinforce the surveillance of low altitude air space, he added.

He reaffirmed that missile batteries were not yet installed around the plant but they could be done "in the coming days."

Earlier Defense Minister Alain Richard said protection zones relying on the fast interception of attack aircraft would be set up around "nuclear plants ...major dams, large industrial installations and our greater urban areas."
