Latest Developments on US Strikes in Afghanistan
FRI, OCT 19, 2001
US and British planes continue bombing military targets as more civilian casualties are being reported in Afghanistan. This comes as US special forces have now entered Afghanistan and are reportedly moving with anti-Taliban forces on Friday. Meanwhile, other US forces back in America are busy preparing to join the war against terrorism.

A small number of special forces have entered Afghanistan. These troops could be the first phase in a more wide-ranging expansion of ground troops in the US anti-terrorist campaign. They were also reportedly on a mission to provide support for Central Intelligence Agency efforts in the heartland of Taliban controlled areas.

Meanwhile, during a fresh wave of the US-led air attacks on major Afghan cities, at least 7 civilians were reportedly killed and 15 others injured in Kandahar alone. Kabul and Jalalabad were also pounded. Eyewitnesses said a TV station and a suspected training camp of the ruling Taliban in Jalalabad were almost completely destroyed.

US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Thursday it was possible that a senior al Qaeda official might have been killed in US air strikes in Afghanistan, but he could not absolutely confirm this.

Meanwhile, more than four thousand troops were part of a mock conflict this week at the US Army's Fort Polk training facility in Louisiana. US military officials wouldn't say whether the troops will be sent to Afghanistan or neighbouring regions. The USS John Young, a destroyer based out of San Diego, departed for the Persian Gulf on Thursday to join two other San Diego-based ships, which have already fired Tomahawk missiles into Afghanistan.
