Australian SAS troops are on their way to join the US-led coalition against the Al-Qaeda network in Afghanistan.
Soldiers from the elite SAS are the first of a 1,500 strong Australian contingent committed by Prime Minister John Howard to head for Afghanistan.
And four Australian jet fighters will use a US Air Force base in the Indian Ocean to operate from. They are expected to perform escort duties for US bombers flying from the island of Diego Garcia.
Australia is also sending four war ships to the region in addition to the more than 1,500 military personnel. One Australian frigate is now serving in the Persian Gulf on sanctions enforcement duty, accompanying the US fifth fleet.
