U.S. jets struck the Taliban frontline in Afghanistan in support of an opposition offensive Wednesday as Afghan civilian casualties mounted, reports reaching here said.
U.S. warplanes carried out sustained raids on the regime's militia at key positions defending the capital Kabul and the northern town of Mazar-i-Sharif.
Refugees who fled in growing numbers to Pakistan reported large scale civilian casualties in the U.S. strikes and the United Nations also said that bombs had hit villages and a mosque and driven most of the people from three major cities in Afghanistan.
