Within hours of the opposition capturing the northern Taliban-held city of Mazar-i-Sharif, US jets resumed their bombardment of frontlines near Kabul. Early on Saturday, a B-52 warplane carpet-bombed Taliban frontline trenches about 25 kilometres north of Kabul. The giant aircraft dropped a dozen or so bombs on trenches about 200 metres from the opposition-held Bagram airport. Northern Alliance forces are on full alert, ready to march towards the frontline. But US Secretary of State Colin Powell says Washington is not encouraging the opposition to try to seize the capital.
