US bombers have pounded the Taliban's spiritual centre in southern Afghanistan and positions north of the capital Kabul. It's the start of the second month of the US-led campaign to force the ruling Taliban to turn over wanted Saudi exile Osama bin Laden.
The bombardment over the southern city of Kandahar continued throughout the night. About 35 kilometers north of Kabul, US jets were hitting Taliban frontlines. Abu Dhabi Television reported that US bombs had killed more than 40 people fleeing the northern Taliban stronghold of Mazar-i-Sharif. The station reported that aircraft fire hit a truck full of villagers heading for Kabul.
Meanwhile, the Taliban's Bakhter Information Agency reported on Friday that reinforcements have been sent to the key northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, and that the militia will soon launch a counter attack.
