US bombers over Afghanistan have continued to pound the Taliban's strategic stronghold in the north and its spiritual leader's headquarters in the south. The Taliban-held city of Mazar-i-Sharif and the southern center of Kandahar have both been targeted for heavy bombardments.
The US-led campaign has entered its second month and jets are still streaking across Afghan skies. Huge plumes of dust and smoke rose from targets just outside Kandahar and are soon followed by return machine-gun fire.
The jets also hit Taliban positions further north outside the capital of Kabul. Opposition soldiers basking in the sun ducked for cover as Taliban militia responded with their own artillery.
The US commander of forces in Afghanistan has confirmed that a gunfight has been raging near Mazar-i-Sharif but offerred no other details. Taliban and opposition sources said frontlines in the area were shifting around a key ridge south of the city.
