US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has said the military operation in Afghanistan was becoming more effective every day and would not take years to complete. Rumsfeld made his latest comments on the war against Osama bin Laden and the Taliban when he visited India on Monday.
Rumsfeld held talks with Indian Defense Minister George Fernandes after he arrived in New Delhi late on Sunday for a 12-hour visit.
Rumsfeld said he and Fernandes talked in general about terrorism.
But he made no mention of US concerns that escalating tensions between India and Pakistan over disputed Kashmir could undermine the campaign to oust Afghanistan's ruling Taliban.
The American defense secretary dismissed speculation that the US military campaign in Afghanistan could drag on for years.
He said there have been larger numbers of US military teams on the ground there, helping with targeting the Taliban, as well as humanitarian assistance.
During the joint news conference, Fernandes said New Delhi looks forward to a long-lasting relationship with Washington.
