Great Buddha rises to higher plane
   THU, AUG 29, 2002

Mogao Grottoes is an internationally recognised Buddhist site. It is located in Dunhuang City of the northwestern China's Gansu province. It's no miracle but recently, the biggest of the grottoes' statues has "grown" one meter taller.

Carving of the Mogao Grottoes began around 1,000 years ago and continued through several dynasties, with statues hewn into rock at the eastern foot of Mingsha Mountain. The biggest Buddha statue was 34.5 meters high when it was excavated. Dust over the ages elevated the earth's surface inside the grotto, blanketing the first metre of the statue.

Work to clean the site has restored the Buddha to its original height, 35.5 meters.
