British firefighters honor New York dead
   MON, SEP 09, 2002

Firefighters across Britain held a minute's silence on Sunday afternoon ahead of the September 11 anniversary to honor colleagues killed in the terror attack on America a year ago.

Organizers of the first-ever International Fire Fighters Day of Remembrance said Sunday's event was focusing in particular on those who lost their lives in the September 11 attacks on the US.

Family and friends of the 343 fire fighters killed in New York joined British crews and members of parliament for a service of Remembrance, at St Giles Church in the City of London.

After the service, the firefighters marched to their memorial near St Paul's Cathedral, where wreaths were laid and a band played the Last Post.

Local crews joined a 15-second sounding of alarms followed by a minute's silence.
