Russia, US share anti-terrorism goal: Putin |
|
Russian President Vladimir Putin told his US counterpart George W. Bush on Wednesday that the eradication of any form of support to terrorism is a common goal for both nations.
In a message sent on the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington, Putin said, "Our common goal is to eradicate any forms of support to and any connivance with terrorism."
Putin said he was confident that "forging Russian-American relations in the spirit of constructive partnership would help consolidate the efforts of the international community in struggles against new threats and challenges."
After the Sept. 11 attacks, all people cherishing peace and stability demonstrated an unprecedented degree of solidarity by rallying together in the campaign against terrorism and solid results were achieved over the past year, said the president.
He noted that relations between Russia and US "were and remain a major component of the modern system of strategic security and the key link in the anti-terrorist campaign."
Putin also called Bush early Wednesday to express condolences on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
"On this day, I want to reiterate my condolences and express not only regret but also support of the whole Russian people to Americans," he said.
Putin voiced strong support to the US-led anti-terror coalition after the Sept. 11 attacks, promoting bilateral relations to a new high level.
