US FBI issues Sept. 11 anniversary alert
   TUE, SEP 10, 2002

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a security warning on eve of the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, urging local police, electrical companies and transportation agencies to stay alert as the nation commemorates the anniversary.

The FBI said in a bulletin posted on its Web site last week that it had received a steady stream of threats mentioning New York and Washington before the Sept. 11 anniversary.

"A large volume of threats of undetermined reliability continues to be received and investigated by the FBI," the bulletin said. "Several of these threats make reference to the events of Sept. 11, 2001 and to New York City and Washington, D.C."

The agency also sent a message over a private law enforcement bulletin system advising a state of alert on Sept. 11.

The FBI said there was no specific or credible information indicating any terrorist attacks, and the alert was issued because of the general threats on the anniversary.

It urged the law enforcement agencies to beef up security for the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York City on Sept. 10, and the World Bank and International Monetary Fund meeting in Washington between Sept. 25-29.

The Web site bulletin was posted by the FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center, an office charged with assessing threats and warning local infrastructure companies and agencies.

Meanwhile, White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said Monday that the United States remained concerned over the threat of new attacks, but so far there was no specific one.

"Anniversaries can be, not necessarily always, can be occasions for heightened terrorist activity," Fleischer said.

He said the country should stay alert "just given the fact that it's a one-year anniversary."
