R: He might be "on the look out “, on the look out for something better, right? Or you could say "She is on the look out for a new man or a new job."
E: Yeah. You can also "look into". "Look into something", that means you want to go investigate it, we also say "to check it out", to go see what's happening. So you might look into a new job or look into some matter.
R: I think "look into" is a very good expression. I have used it when I need sometime to think about something. Someone will say, "Oh, I have this problem and I want you to solve it." And this expression allows me to say " I'll look into it." meaning I'll ask people, I'll find out things, and then I'll get back to you. That's a very polite way of saying, "Wait, I can't help you this moment, I'll look into it."
E: We often use "look" when somebody doesn't look good. We say she looks good or she looks bad. When someone isn't look very well we say, if they look really bad, we say, "She looks like death warmed over."
R: Which is really a terrible expression, because you really look bad. Not only you've died but also then you were warmed over again.
E: Kind of like warming your food in the microwave.
R: In the west, you know, an expression like that, is meant to be funny, it doesn't meaning you really died. It's not an expression of respect for the dead. It's just meaning you look terrible.
E: You know, I think especially in the United states, There is a tendency to exaggerate things, and so we'll say "Oh, I love that." or "I hate that." so in Chinese it will be "噢，我爱something" or "我恨死它". It's a very strong exaggerated language, and it doesn't really mean that. When a person says,” Oh, I hate that." It doesn't really mean it's so strong. It's like saying "I don't like it." "Hate" is often the same, as "I don't like that." It's not as strong as it sounds or it might sound to you, so when we say "Oh, she is liked a death warmed over." it doesn't looked like she died, she just doesn't look good.
R: Right. And those exaggerations are meant to be either humorous or relaxing. They're not serious, so you shouldn't feel too uncomfortable if someone is exaggerating. But "look here", there is another "look" phrase. Look here, you need a look out for No. 1.
E: "Look here" is like saying, "listen to me", "I'm gonna tell you something" "Look here young man.” grandma would say that, "Look here young lady."
R: And "look out for No. 1" is a funny one and you can look out for other people, you might have to look out for your little sister, you need to take care of someone and make sure they're safe. But "look out for No.1" means yourself, take care of yourself.
E: Yeah. It's sometimes used in a bad way if somebody looks out after No. 1 too much; it's not a good thing in person, its just selfish. So that's a phrase that can be used in a positive way to remind someone to take care of he or she or you can use in a negative way, you say, "Oh, she just looks out after No. 1."
R: That's true. If you "look over something", generally it means you're going to read through a document. If you were a layer for instance, you don't want to sign the paper until you've looked over it, meaning you've read everything carefully and you know what it says.
E: But if you look over your shoulder, it means you're nervous about who's following you. And so, if you got someone looking over their shoulder, that means they are worried about what's behind them.
R: Yeah, someone's behind you, even if you were working at your computer, someone's looking over your shoulders. It's a nervous feeling, right?
E: So, we'll leave you with one more "She is good-looking."
