Lotus Garden is a typical new residential community in Guangdong, but of its more than 10,000 residents, 95% are from Hong Kong. From its environment to its architectural design, the community has incorporated various elements of Hong Kong housing.

Before his retirement, Mr. Wu Ting Jin worked as a driver in Hong Kong, but he and his wife have now been enjoying the leisurely pace of life Lotus Garden has to offer for 4 years, and they enjoy being able to do a little gardening.

"The plant was very small when we bought it, now it's big. The mango tree was little when we planted it. It's been growing for two years and it's a lot taller. We spend half of our time here and half in Hong Kong. We just returned from a week in Hong Kong.

We have a "half and half" schedule, " said Wu Tingjin, retired driver from Hong Kong.

"Listening to the rain at night and having fun in the garden during the day" sounds like a fairly poetic way of life for this retired couple. And they've also made a lot of friends in this community who are also from Hong Kong.

Neighbors originally from Hong Kong have a lot of fun together, playing games, sharing their views on the world or chatting about daily life.

Mr. Ye Jian Gui and his wife moved into Lotus Garden at the same time as the Wus, and they have become close friends.

Although the place is not big, it's attractively decorated and is far from the noise of the city, something that makes it attractive to many who have come here from Hong Kong.

"We both worked for the government in the field of public hygiene. Now we're retired. We feel life is more enjoyable here, " said Wu Tingjin, retired driver from Hong Kong.

Zhangmutou is a place that has become popular for living, vacationing, or investing in. People with different professional and social backgrounds have purchased properties in this small town, and while they are pursuing different goals, they all share one thing in common. It feels like home here. In 2006, people from Hong Kong purchased more real estate on the mainland than mainland residents. According to a survey, more than 200 million Hong Kong residents currently intend to purchase real estate on the mainland, many having already settled in cities such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen in the south and Shanghai and Beijing in the north.
