The Global city will be completed in three steps
Huang Yan, director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning, said that according to the positioning described in Beijing's general urban planning, the first step is to build the framework of an international modern city, the second step is to complete the international modern city, and the third step will be to build a global city.
Striding towards a global city
The urban construction planning will emphasize the construction of the key functional zones and promote the development of the unified design between the city and the countryside.
According to Huang Yan, director of the Beijing Municipal Planning Committee, the current urban planning of Beijing is to constantly improve the management of urban and rural construction planning, play instructive roles in the planning, carry the construction of an internationalized metropolis forward, and to further advance Beijing's modernization and internationalization on the basis of the urban orientation of "China's capital, internationalized city, famous city of culture and livable city," that aims at constructing a high-end internationalized city and from the view of constructing a global city. The urban planning mainly includes emphasizing the construction of the main functional zones, better programming Zhongguancun, the independent innovation demonstration pilot, as well as strengthening the planning of the regions between urban and suburban areas and the emerging cities and small towns, and promoting the development of a unified design between the city and the countryside.
Architecture: Devoting efforts to the construction of energy saving buildings
According to Sui Zhenjiang, director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Beijing should devote efforts to the construction of energy-saving buildings and speed up the energy-saving reconstruction of current buildings. This year, the comprehensive energy-saving reconstruction will be promoted and household heat metering equipment will be installed in newly-built residential communities. The housing industrialization will be the highlight in the construction of a global city and promoted in the whole of Beijing. This year, Beijing plans to build at least 500,000 square meters of assembly-style residences.
Bushiness industry still needs comprehensive planning
According to Ren Suwei, vice director of the Beijing Municipal Committee of Commerce, Beijing ranks 15th as a shopping city and 8th as a food city in the world on the 2009 Forbes List. This is a good foundation, but still needs a comprehensive planning around business and service industries as well as foreign trade to reach the standard of a global city. Some basic plans will be arranged in the future.
GDP: GDP per capita exceeded 10,000 U.S. dollars
In 2009, Beijing's GDP reached 1,186.59 billion yuan, up 10.1 percent and Beijing's GDP per capita exceeded 10,000 U.S. dollars. According to the World Bank's measure of wealth, Beijing was at an upper-middle level. In the future, when Beijing's GDP per capita exceeds 11,000 U.S. dollars, the city will become a developed city.
Airport: Beijing Capital International Airport has become the fourth largest airport in the world
It is expected that Beijing Capital International Airport received over 65 million total passengers in 2009, making the airport the fourth largest in the world and the largest in Asia. It is predicted that the passengers of the airport will reach 75 million in 2010.
