Brief Introduction to International Varsity Debate

The origin of International Varsity Debate (I.V.D.)
In 1986, in order to promote the use and impact of Chinese language and to enhance the comunications and friendship among local universities, the Boardcasting Bureau of Singapore iniciated a brand-new TV game ------ varsity debate , which used to be called 'Asian Varsity Debate' and was held every two years. Peking University and Fudan University were invited respectively to take part in the first and the second 'Asian Varsity Debate' , and both won champions with excellent performance.
In 1992, during his visit to China, pesedent of Singapore TV raised the proposal of co-ordinating 'Asian Varsity Debate' with Chinese Central Television Station(CCTV) , and the two sides reached a consensus on cooperation very soon.
The Youth Department of CCTV was appointed to negociate with Singapore on the details of cooperation. In January 1993, an official agreement was finally reached.
Stated on the agreement is:
The purpose of I.V.D.:
1. Promoting the use of Chinese language around the world, and to display the beauty of Chinese.
2. Intensifying the communication and friendship among contestant countries, regions, universities and young students.
3. Promoting the cooperation among international TV counterparts, in order to enabe the television network to broaden its coverage, become more representative, and to improve TV programmes' cultural taste.
China and Singapore would take turns to hold I.V.D. every two years, and share the program's copyright.
China sent its Fudan University to the first I.V.D. held in Singapore. The total 7 debates aired on CCTV started a nation-wide debate wave which last to taday.
