Ren's personal information:

Nicknamed Xidan Girl and Xidan Angel by netizens, Ren was born in 1988 in the countryside in Zhuozhou, Hebei Province. She came to Beijing in 2004, and began to earn a living by singing in an underground tunnel at Xidan.

In June 2009, Ren entered the《Come on! Oriental Angels》competition in Beijing.

Ren sang to her heart's content after she returned to Beijing

"I feel most free to sing here!" Ren said as she leaned against the wall of the underground tunnel at Xidan and tuned her guitar strings.

On October 12, Ren became very excited as she returned to the underground tunnel at Xidan. At 9:00 am, she began preparations in the tunnel.

Squatting with her back against the tunnel wall, she auditioned as she tuned the guitar strings. After tuning the strings, she began to sing with a smile as if nobody were there. Although there were a few passers-by and nobody gave her money, she kept singing to her heart's content.

"She feels most free to sign and sings the best here," seeing Ren singing one song after another, her friend commented.

During her singing for over one hour, the reporter counted over 40 passers-by, but no one greeted her or took photos with her.

Maybe out of curiosity, some people turned around to watch her, but more people did not pay much attention to this common girl.

It seems that Ren remains very common among the crowd walk to and fro in the underground tunnel, although she has got some recognition after taking part in the "Oriental Angel" competition.

Days at Xidan

On youku.com there was a video titled "A girl at Xidan's underpass singing Westlife's Angel's Wings" from January 26, 2009. Numerous netizens were deeply touched by this girl. And the girl's name is Ren Yueli.

She earned a monthly income of 1,000 yuan during her first days at Xidan

FW: How did you come up with the idea of singing at an underpass at Xidan?

Ren: Actually, when I first came to Beijing, I worked in a small restaurant. After I worked there for a month, the restaurant owner refused to pay me. Out of money, I became a vagrant on the streets.

When I saw singers singing at an underpass to earn money, I was tempted by that idea. I've liked singing since I was a child. So I learned from a wandering singer how to play the guitar. One month later, I could sing songs to make money on my own at an underpass.

FW: How old were you when you first came to Beijing?

Ren: 16.

FW: You were still a child at that time. You must have experienced many hardships, right?

Ren: I do not want to talk about the hardships, because if I do I will shed tears again.
