The Beijing Palace Museum is holding a special calligraphy works and paintings exhibition, where authentic works and fake counterparts are being displayed side-by-side. Organizers hope art lovers can learn some ways of discerning real from pirated versions of calligraphy and painting masterpieces.

"Bamboo" is one of the most famous paintings of the Ming Dynasty's great painter, Zheng Banqiao. It's also one of the masterpieces most subject to being pirated. Comparing the two exhibits side-by-side, visitors can clearly see the inferior skills behind the fake -- and the painting mastery of Zheng Banqiao. This calligraphy work was done by the Ming Dynasty's cursive handwriting calligrapher Zhu Yunming, renowned for his exquisitely smooth handwriting. The copy, hanging above the original, was done by his grandson. And the gap between the two versions is rather obvious.

"The base of researching these artworks is to determine the real from the fake. This exhibition introduces nine techniques that are used to reproduce originals, such as copying and decreasing the number of words. So art lovers can learn how to judge calligraphy works and paintings," said Jin Yunchang from Beijing Palace Museum.

120 exhibits representing the main styles from the Ming and Qing Dynasties are on display. All the exhibits, including the replicas, are from the Palace Museum collection. The exhibition will last until the end of October.
